Field-Tested by David Gutowski
in Cullman, Alabama
Before my freshman year of high school, my family moved from Philadelphia to a small town in northern Alabama. A Yankee city boy my entire life, culture shock is a kind term for what I encountered, so I searched out Southern literature to help with the transition. A local librarian suggested Flannery O’Connor, and as I plowed through this collection of stories, I would see the principals on the streets and in the downtown shops of the town. To this day, I am thankful for the insights into Southern culture that these short stories shared with a “damn Yankee” (one that stays in the South).
David Gutowski publishes the (mostly) music blog, Largehearted Boy from deep in the American south.
