The Secret History
by Donna Tartt

Field-Tested by Claire Zulkey

in Virginia Beach, Virginia

I’ve read this Donna Tartt novel over so many summers that the pages are nearly translucent from Banana Boat Tanning Oil. Basically, it’s a well-written guilty pleasure. It has the elements of a trashy novel (sex, drugs, money, cynical youth), but it’s no Harlequin. Laying out in the Virginia Beach sun is boring, but Tartt’s juicy mystery keeps me turning the pages summer after summer until I’m a sultry brown.

Claire Zulkey is a writer living in Chicago. She is a television critic for the LATimes.com and The AV Club, the entertainment section of The Onion. In 2009, she will be publishing her first Young Adult novel with Dutton. You can find out more about her at her website.
