Field-Tested by Andrew Womack
in Baja California, Mexico
The title suggests a resort theme in its own little way, but it’s only by chance that I spent a week in a Baja beach town reading the hilariously twisted Bulgakov classic. I was actually reaching for The Sun Also Rises when the cab honked outside and unsteered my hand. It turned out to be the right pick, though. The book is so engaging that I only had the chance to catch my breath and reflect on the wildly spinning plot between stops at the sunburn counter (whose attendant swore up and down on a special, one-to-two-part mixture of aloe and Icy Hot for my feverish-pink knees). Guaranteed to keep your street cred amongst the other lobster-red doofuses with their noses stuck in Gogol, Nabokov, and the other good-time beach novels.
