Field-Tested by Dave Reidy
in Nueva Vallarta, Mexico
Aimee Bender’s debut novel was my morning beach diversion in Nueva Vallarta, Mexico. Bender’s Mona Gray is a 19-year-old math teacher whose father’s illness disrupts an already uneasy transition to adulthood. Throughout the book, Mona bemoans her inability to get out of town for even a weekend away. This otherwise minor theme evokes an odd sensation in the vacationer, something self-consciously fortunate, like the feeling of lying in bed, safe and dry, while thunder rolls in the distance.
Dave Reidy lives in Chicago and writes fiction. He is working on a novel. He can be found his website.
