Is this a book you should read next to a pool, in 110-degrees of Palm Springs heat? I did it, and you can, too. The book is so dense in prose, it could scare your pants off. But you’re not wearing any, so enjoy. There’s something cool-breeze soothing about a book set partly in Depression-era Chicago, what with it so cold in the winter, so hot and lacking in pools in the summer. And as Augie struggles to find meaning in this world, be happy that you, my vacation-taking friend, have already found it. When you’re done, raise that big book above your Banana Boat-oiled head and proclaim, “Ladies and gentleman, the always-refreshing Saul Bellow!”
