Field-Tested by Kevin Guilfoile
in Paris, France
There isn’t anything about this Elmore Leonard novel that makes it especially appropriate to Paris, but if you are piggybacking on your wife’s business trip to that city, spending the mornings alone in the Louvre, and your afternoons reading in a park off the Champs Elysees, you can go one of two ways: read a book appropriate to the locale, perhaps one about another American in Paris, or you can choose the most American writer you can think of and delight in the juxtaposition. There’s something very cool about immersing yourself in the world of Detroit ne’er-do-wells while surrounded by French people walking their tiny dogs. It says, “I’m the kind of engaged American you Europeans would like very much, but seriously, don’t mess with me.”
Kevin Guilfoile is the author of Cast of Shadows and co-author of My First Presidentiary: A Scrapbook by George W. Bush. He can be found at his website.
