"Bob Dylan is a friend and colleague of Neil Young. Neil Young has appeared on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. The Daily Show With Jon Stewart has previously featured Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe's brother is Terry Crowe. Terry Crowe used to date my cousin. And my cousin is related to me. Now will you give me a damn CD?" OK, we will. But you could have asked nicer!
We were getting sick of seeing "Masked and Anonymous," in the answers, but here's one that didn't come from the Kevin Bacon Machine: I went to see Bob Dylan in the summer of 2005 in Wichita, Kansas and had a beer with Luke Wilson. Luke Wilson was in 'Masked and Anonymous' with Bob Dylan.
Winner #1: I once sold a VW microbus to Scott Powell of Sha Na Na. Sha Na Na and Scott played at Woodstock as did Joan Baez. Joan Baez sang with Bob Dylan at Newport.
It's a big day here at HQ. We are about to give out winners to our final question (connect YOURSELF with Bob Dylan), and 3 grand prizes - the complete Dylan catalog on CD. Winners will be notified by e-mail.
The closest connection between Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Bob Dylan was pointed out by a few people: "at the 2003 International Achievement Summit twenty-two new honorees were inducted into the Academy of Achievement, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg."
Remember, get your entries in today!
Quite a few people found the connection between Bob Dylan and SpongeBob SquarePants through Scarlett Johanson. We'll give a disc to the person who told us: (1) The SpongeBob SquarePants film features Scarlett Johanson as the voice of Mindy. (2) Scarlett Johansson is featured in Bob Dylan's music video of "When The Deal Goes Down".
We're about to announce some more winners. Today is the absolute LAST DAY to get your final entries in before we draw for the grand prize. We'll be awarding albums to a number of entries to the current question, so don't forget to get your entry in today.
Final Question: How do you get from yourself to Bob Dylan?
Only two questions to go! How do you get from SpongeBob SquarePants to Bob Dylan?
Several people pointed out that Bob Dylan and J.D. Salinger were both photographed by Ted Russell. We've picked one winner at random to receive a CD.
Here's a winner on creativity: (1) J.D Salinger wrote "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" which was made into the movie "My Foolish Heart(1949)" (2) "My Foolish Heart" starred Susan Hayward who auditioned for Gone with the Wind (3) "Gone with the Wind(1939)" was directed by Victor Fleming (4) Victor Fleming directed "Tortilla Flat(1942)" (5) "Tortilla Flat" was writen by John Steinbeck (6) John Steinbeck's "Cannery Row" is considered an influence of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row."
How do you get from Ruth Bader Ginsberg to Bob Dylan?
Thanks to Extra Extra for linking to our contest and giving their link from Salinger to Dylan. For the link and the creativity, we award an album!
Here's a more creative route: (1) Jackson Pollock was photographed by Hans Namuth. (2) This iconic photo was recreated in chocolate by artist Vik Muniz. (3) Vik Muniz later created a collage portrait of Seu Jorge made of confetti from magazines, featured on the cover of his album Cru. (4) Seu Jorge's previous album was a collection of David Bowie songs recorded for The Life Aquatic, directed by Wes Anderson. (5) Wes Anderson's previous movie, The Royal Tannenbaums, featured Bob Dylan's "Wigwam" on the soundtrack. Nice work.
Time to award a winner for our Jackson Pollock question. Many people pointed out that both Dylan and Pollock were frequent patrons of the Cedar Street Tavern. Hats off to winner who also provided us with a link.
How do you get from J.D. Salinger to Bob Dylan?
Everyone in the world wrote in to tell us that Bob Dylan's favorite baseball player is Derek Jeter. Dylan said, in a recent interview, "And I don't know how anybody can't like Derek [Jeter]. I'd rather have him on my team than anybody." We'll select someone at random and they'll get a copy of Modern Times.
How do you get from Jackson Pollock to Bob Dylan?
Finally, our shortest winner is 2, not 1 connection! Here's the random winner: (1) Mary-Kate & Ashley were stars on Full House with actor/musicion (and occasional Beach Boy drummer) John Stamos. (2) John Stamos appears on a celebrity lullaby album called Unexpected Dreams with Jeremy Irons, who is performing a cover of Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love."
Question 9: How do you get from Derek Jeter to Bob Dylan?
Question 8: How do you get from Mary-Kate & Ashley to Bob Dylan?
Here's a creative Yo-Yo Ma to Bob Dylan connection that doesn't involve Masked & Anonymous, though it easily could have: (1) Yo-Yo Ma is mentioned on numerous episodes of Seinfeld by Cosmo Kramer, played by Michael Richards. (2) Michael Richards worked on Seinfeld during the time Larry David was a writer for the show (3) Larry David had Martin Scorsese on his show Curb Your Enthuisam twice. (4) Martin Scorsese directed No Direction Home and The Last Waltz, both of which Dylan was in. Send that man an album!
Our winner on the Yo-Yo Ma question made a good simple connection: Both Bob Dylan and Yo-Yo Ma have honorary Doctorates from Princeton University. Nice work.
Here are winners for our question on David Beckham. The shortest connection: "David Beckham and Bob Dylan are both immortalized in Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum." We had an argument about whether or not to accept this, because it felt a bit too easy for us. A bit too close to "David Beckham and Bob Dylan have both worn blue jeans." You've been warned.
Question 7: How do you get from Yo-Yo Ma to Bob Dylan?
Our winner for creativity takes the long way, and we appreciate that too: (1) The 1975 psuedo-documentary "Bugs Bunny Superstar" was narrated by Orson Welles. (2) Welles co-starred with French actress Cecile Aubry in the 1950 period drama "The Black Rose." (3) Aubry wrote a series of novels called "Belle et Sébastien" about a young boy and his dog living in the Pyrenees Mountains, which were adapted into a live action show. (4) Scottish Singer Stuart Murdoch and bassist Stuart David adopted the Anglocized name for the TV series for their pop band, Belle and Sebastian. (5) Belle and Sebastian's 1996 album "If You're Feeling Sinister" contains the track "Like Dylan in the Movies." (6) "Like Dylan in the Movies" alludes to the famed 1967 D.A. Pennebaker documentary about Dylan, "Don't Look Back." Nice work.
We've got two winners in the Bugs Bunny question. Our random winner for providing the lowest possible number of connections told us that: "Bugs Bunny is referred to in Bob's stream of consciousness prose Tarantula". Nice work.
Question Six: How do you get from David Beckham to Bob Dylan?
Great entries coming in on the Bugs question, and lots of them. Winners and a new puzzler tomorrow. We start shipping ther prizes in the next few days.
We've had to move to cartoon characters in the hopes we can get a winning connection that takes more than one step. Our winner on the John Ford question points out that both John Ford and Bob Dylan were subjects of the PBS TV show American Masters.
Question Five: How do you get from Bugs Bunny to Bob Dylan?
Our random winner, who got the connection in the lowest possible number of connections told us that: each Rice and Dylan have a track dedicated to them on Sandra Bernhard's recording of her live show Everything Bad & Beautiful. Congratulations!
We've got a few winners to highlight today. First, a creative entry from our question on Condoleezza Rice, which took all six degrees: 1. Chevron named an oil tanker after Condoleezza Rice; 2. Because of controversy, Chevron renamed the ship the Altair Voyager. 3. The Altair 8000 was a popular microcomputer sold as a kit by Popular Electronics magazine in 1975. 4. Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs couldn't afford an Altair 8000, so they built their own microcomputer and named it the Apple I, which led to the founding of Apple Computer. 5. In 2001, Apple entered the music business, with the release of the first iPod. 6. In 2006, Bob Dylan appeared in an ad for the iPod, singing the song "Someday Baby" from his album Modern Times. Nice work!
How do you get from John Ford to Bob Dylan?
The new question takes some thought but we've received a couple very smart answers in just the first ten minutes since it went up. Remember, you can win with the lowest number of connections and you can also win by submitting the most creative connections.
Question #3: How do you get from Condoleezza Rice to Bob Dylan?
Our first question about Bob Marley ended on Monday, and the best response had the connection down to just one: "Dylan went to see Marley perform at the Roxy in Los Angeles in 1975 (true!)". So congratulations to the winner. We'll have a new question up later today, and each entry gives you a better chance to win our grand prize - every Dylan CD ever - so keep checking back.
Question Two: How do you get from Sid Vicious to Bob Dylan?
It wasn't the shortest entry so far, but we're also spotlighting creativity, so we'll be sending an album to a contestant who told us that Rohan Marley is Bob Marley's son, Rohan Marley is married to Lauryn Hill, who was Zach Braff's childhood friend. Zach Braff's soundtrack to Garden State features "The Only Living Boy In New York" by Simon & Garfunkel, and Paul Simon toured with Bob Dylan in the summer of 1999. Nice work! Keep those entries coming in!
Question One: How do you get from Bob Marley to Bob Dylan?
Welcome to subscribers of our CP Infrequent Mailings. Have a go at the contest before we open the doors up wide on Monday. The current question is just for you.
Well our final test question, How do you get from Robert De Niro to Bob Dylan? worked out well but it was a bit too easy. We can see already that The Last Waltz is going to figure prominently in people's connection-making. Plus webchhk sent us a link to this connection.
