Everybody is talking about the mysterious and awesome trailer for the new film from J. J. Abrams that is set to debut on January 18, 2008. Code-named Cloverfield, the materials posted and hidden online have generated a ton of speculation about the subject of the movie.
First off, if you haven't already, take a minute to enjoy the trailer.
Is it about terrorism, a new American Godzilla, or maybe even a good old-fashioned alien invasion? We decided to see what we could find out using the high-tech tools in the CP Labs arsenal.
1. After a careful frame-by-frame analysis of the trailer we isolated something that really caught our attention. It occurs at exactly the one minute and thirty-second mark, during the street scene as the actors are looking back. We've highlighted the area in question, behind the flying "Lady Liberty head" here.
2. Using some highly-sophisticated image processing software, we managed to coax a bit more detail from the scene. Very exciting.
3. If you'd rather experience the film innocently, don't go any further. You have been warned. Finally, we enhanced the image by means of a "nearest-neighbor" algorithm and the results are much, much scarier than all the speculation to date. All is revealed. -July 27, 2007
