View this archive as a catalog of sorts. The items listed here are things we have spent our hard-earned cash to purchase. If that doesn't serve as an endorsement, we don't know what will. In the rare case in which something arrived and, for whatever reason, we were dissapointed with it we have banished it from this archive and will never again dare speak its name.

Okay all you last minute shoppers, order anything from Gifted today by 3:00 CST and you can still get overnight delivery. ms-12.21.07

A personal fave from Gifted. Once or twice a year I usually head over to the little card shop in my neighborhood and spend some time picking out ten or so cards I can use throughout the year for birtHDays, thank yous, holidays, etc. Unfortunately I can't get my friends to do the same which is why they'll all be getting a set of Julie's super fantastic Foodie Greeting Cards. No more last minute trips to the store en route to a birtHDay. Is it time for lunch yet? dw-12.18.07

A personal fave from Gifted. Sunday I was at a party featuring one of those Secret Santa scenarios where you can steal someone else's gift rather than choosing one that's still wrapped, and Ork's Chicago Neighborhoods Poster was so popular, feelings were actually hurt. Now I need three more to smooth things over. bb-12.18.07

A personal fave from Gifted. My grandmother has this fantastic desk, lots of nooks, little cubbyholes and mini-drawers. When I was little, my twin sister and I used to spend hours at the desk, playing newspaper. I'd run off to interview my Dad then run back to the desk and type up my story. Inevitably I'd get distracted and start poking around. Looking at letters, photos, and whatever else was tucked away here and there. Doug Wilson's Blind Boxes remind me of my grandmother's desk, lovely, sentimental things just waiting to surprise you. ms-12.18.07

A personal fave from Gifted. I don't like to fly, but I like reading about airplanes. I'm incredibly picky with food, yet I love seeing beautifully prepared meals. And while I absolutely hate to be personally involved with anything math related, I really dig Claire Ironside & Angela Iarocci's Lucky Squirrel Print, which has everything to do with numbers and data sets and statistics. Having these prints makes me look like I'm not such a big baby, if just by proxy. sd-12.17.07

A personal fave from Gifted. From the moment I saw Jay Bryant's Butter and Concrete Screen Prints for Gifted, I knew that they were the perfect gift for my art school friends. But how and where should they be displayed? It's likely that a Joseph Beuys inspired space will result, where the butter and concrete will be accompanied with plenty of felt and chalk and cardboard. That being said, they'd look just as great on a sleek white wall. se-12.17.07

A personal fave from Gifted. Brendan Dawes' 2001 Cinema Redux prints are to be shown at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC this spring. Brendan talks about his approach to this 'cinematic DNA' in a short essay, The Things Around Us. Buy today, we'll ship today. jc-12.17.07

Big day for mail. First, the set of twelve live Pixies discs we designed, arrived via DHL. Then, Issue #1 of JPG Magaine showed up. And, no surprise, it's beautiful. jc-01.19.05

We just received our Speak Up Posters in the mail and they look even better laid out on our foosball table than they do online. Sweet. jc-01.11.05

"Maybe some kin made a killing outta balloons somehow at the turn of some century, but our side of the family never got any inheritence from 'em." From The Balloon Man Short Film, shot by Mal Sharpe in 1972, edited in 2004. SharpeWorld presents a CD of newly unearthed early 70s recordings by cable access cult hero Bill Morrison. Cha-ching. jc-01.11.05

Cartographer as design hero. David Imus and Patrick Dunlavey in cooperation with The Alaska Geographic Society have spent three years creating this new map of Alaska. "I'm not satisfied to take another mapmaker's word for it," he said. "Do they say the road is paved? Well, I want to talk to the road engineer." Cha-Ching. Via The Map Room. jc-12.28.04

"Vinyl Will Kill! is a book about the fascinating and growing genre of 3D Designer Toys, and the process from initial concept in the designer's head, through to how it finally makes it to the shelf, and to collectors around the world." jc-12.15.04

Our friends at The Quiet Life have launched The Camera Club. They've restocked their shelves with lots of new stuff for the holidays too. jc-12.03.04

RCH posted about Sam Brown's Exploding Dog recently and I'd like to add his new book Amazing Rain to the discussion, and to the bookshelf at my house too. Wish For Something Better, his previous book, is a big fave with my kids and with me. Cha-ching. jc-11.29.04

You know it's a good app when you try the free 7-day demo for 15 minutes and go right back and pay the thirty bucks. That's what we did with iStopMotion from Boinx. Really fun and useful. We're creating a little piece of a project for Jewelboxing with it. jc-11.05.04

A small, beautiful book full of big, beautiful photos arrived from Apeture yesterday. A collection of the Kodak Colorama photos, 565 18 x 50 foot backlit photos that appeared on the east balcony of Grand Central Station. A portrait of a bright, frozen, Cold War era America. Check the story behind the installation here. jc-11.02.04

Eboy's Superbroncobattle Poster. Monstrous. Cha-ching. Available through the carefully-stocked Magma Rareful Shop. jc-10.28.04

Forty-Eight Posters, Josef Müller-Brockman from the Image Now Gallery in Dublin. Beautiful, quiet presentation of the work. People who like this sort of thing will find this exactly the sort of thing they like. Update: The catalogue arrived from Dublin today. Ooooh. It feels like a holy text. History of the Poster would make a nice shelf-mate. jc-10.14.04

A convoluted retail tale. Armand has a blog about travel and journals and such called Moleskinerie. He wrote something nice about Jewelboxing. I saw it in the referrer's log. Reading his site, I remembered that I really wanted one of those classic notebooks from Moda and Moda in Milan. The large ones, with the grid pattern on the pages. They are distributed in the US by Kikkerland, who also carries these awesome transparent playing cards. Anyhow, I ordered four notebooks from Ship the Web, but on the way there I found Mxyplyzyk (pronounced 'mix-EE-pliz-ick'), a shop in NYC, who I would have rather purchased from, because their site and products are so cool, but who only take orders over the phone or in person. So I didn't. I do still want Mr. P. but he'll have to wait. I gotta get back to work. jc-10.14.04

Oh Joy!!! The complete first and second seasons of The Ren and Stimpy Show is now available! cha-ching! "Eeet iz not I who am crazy; eeet iz I who am MAD!" av-10.12.04

If you can find one at your bookstore (my local Borders had just one copy left) be sure to pick up the September issue of The Believer, featuring a reprint of "Army Man #1," the first issue of Simpsons co-creator George Meyer's legendary late-80's mimeographed humor zine. The September Believer also features terrific interviews with Meyer and NYer/Army Man contributor Ian Frazier. Frazier's super-short essay "My Ideal Woman" is worth the cover price by itself. kg-09.30.04

"Stuff to wear. Stuff to read. Stuff for creatives." Veer opens the doors on their merchandise storefront. Real nice, expecially the Lorem Ipsum tee. Cha-ching. jc-09.16.04

"They were paperbacks you could fit in your back pocket, with jaw-dropping cover paintings and bare-knuckled prose that grabbed you by the collar with the first sentence and held you until the last page. No one's published books like that in years. Until now." Hard Case Crime revives the genre in spectacular fashion. The cover art is beautiful and the schedule of titles irresistible. They should offer a subscription-series, if you ask me. Cha-ching for Fade to Blonde. Via Daniel. jc-09.09.04

240 overdesigned pages! Bought the House Industries book yesterday at 3pm. Finished it last night late. A great visual tour of the company's history and major projects. The writing is conversational and smart-alecky. Just how I like it. Four stars. jc-08.22.04

Large-format, limited-run prints on canvas (!) from Orthographic. Received ours yesterday. The tactile feel of the canvas and the deep, rich ink coverage is really top-notch. Virtual stuff is nice but we sometimes forget the power of craftsmanship and the actual object too. Amazing. jc-08.03.04

Many of my posts end in the phrase "found among other things," referencing unabashed link pilferage from Things Magazine's weblog. Their real-world compendium, 17-18 is their biggest yet and is just now available. I've ordered mine. Cha-ching. jc-08.03.04

Our copy of Bathing Ape + Refill Mag 3 arrived over the weekend. It's better than expected and our expectations were high. jc-08.02.04

The new They Might Be Giants CD The Spine is easily the best TMBG record in eight years. For the completist, order at iTunes and pick up an extra track. kg-07.27.04

I was sitting at the iMac at home with my "3 and 3/4" year-old Spencer, looking at pix of the first lunar landing on its 35th anniversary yesterday. This morning I've been rummaging around for more stuff to share with him and found this Quicktime VR and also this awesome poster, 'Race to the Moon,' that will be perfect for his room. Cha-ching! jc-07.21.04

Design in Flight, a PDF magazine for designers. Looks great and includes an impressive roster of contributors. (BTW, the little heart icon means we loved the product enough to buy one. It's not that we're all about throwing money around, but we figure that's the ultimate endorsement of the products and services we appreciate.) jc-07.01.04

True Motion of the Moon, a short-story by Enzo23. Designed and presented by J. Gura for Prate Computer Channel. 12 pages; debossing; stitch binding; hand-numbered and signed. Edition of 500. $10. Could not resist. Cha-ching. jc-06.25.04

At last, Gum 2. The bubble has landed. The bubble has landed. Go. Click around. Especially 'Sunken Lust,' created by MK12. Then order. I bought No. 1 and felt better for it. Just whizzed some cash over for No. 2, expect to feel better still. jc-05.03.04

UPS just delivered my Cosmouse from StrangeCo. Money well spent, he's beautiful and the detached space helmet is the coolest. jc-03.04.04

Craig Thompson's graphic novel Blankets sure looks swell. I just hit the ol' add-to-cart button. Via DDC. jc-02.11.04

You won't get a crick in your neck looking at The Skyscraper Page but you will learn a lot of cool stuff. Diagrams like this one are well-organized and presented. Beautiful too. Cha-ching. Couldn't resist the poster. jc-06.17.03

I heard a long feature on the Langley Schools Music Project on NPR Saturday and what I heard has been haunting me (in a good way) all week. In the mid-seventies, sixty rural school children in western Canada were recorded by their music teacher singing rock songs and accompanying themselves on stripped down instruments. The recordings weren't originally meant for commercial consumption, but as the songs were passed around they were hailed by many as outsider art. The records have been released on CD and this page has several samples as MP3s. Start with the Beach Boys stuff and then move on to "Desperado" and "Space Oddity". Surreal and beautiful, you won't stop until you get through them all. kg-11.08.01
